Josh woke up with a start. He tried hard to remember what dream had caused him to wake from fear, but it was already half-faded. All he could remember was a dark room and fire. He shrugged it off and looked at his clock. He jumped, startled as the clock went off just as he was looking at it. He turned it off and got out of bed.
“Time to go to school,” Josh said gloomily.
After he took his shower and got dressed, he went into the living room. He turned on the overhead light. No one else was awake in the house; he was an only child and his parents were still asleep.
Josh quickly did his morning routine before calling his best friend, Michael. He was not entirely shocked when no one answered the phone. Michael rarely ever got himself up on time and Josh mostly had to go wake his buddy up before they walked to their school. Josh made sure he had everything in his backpack and left for Michael’s house.
He walked to Michael’s window and knocked on it.
“Time to wake up,” Josh said, “come on, get up.”
Michael refused to get up, though. He waved off Josh’s voice as if it was a hand and covered his face with his blanket. A few moments later, Josh could hear Michael’s slow, drawn-out snores.
“I think I do too much for this friendship,” Josh complained to himself as he started to climb into Michael’s room.
He got inside the house and nearly tripped over the window ledge.
“Ouch,” he said silently. He looked to Michael to make see if Michael had awoken.
“Figures,” Josh said, noticing Michael still had not woken up, “this is the part I hate.”
Josh shook his friend, trying to wake him up. The only response he got was a punch in the face.
“Okay,” Josh said, grunting, “let’s play rough.” He dragged Michael off the bed and Michael’s back slammed on his floor.
“Ouch,” Michael screamed in pain, “what are you doing?”
“It’s time for school,” Josh explained, letting his friend go, “or at least it was when I came over. Thanks to you, we’re gonna be late if we don’t hurry. Get dressed and let’s go.”
“How’d you get in here,” Michael asked, trying to keep the sun out of his eyes.
“I had to come in through your window,” Josh explained quickly, “now hurry!”
“Okay, okay.”
Josh climbed back out the window while he let Michael get ready. Ten minutes later, Michael came out, quietly closing his front door.
“You’re lucky no one saw you climb in and out of my window, they could have called the cops,” Michael pointed out.
“You’re lucky I didn’t kick your ass,” Josh said, massaging his jaw, “that’s the last time I wake you up.”
