For the first 16 years of Keir’s life, he never really experienced much animosity. Sure, some kids made fun of him for how he looked and the way he acted. He had never thought that the other kids could despise him for being a Dermian. One day, when he was 16, Keir had found out that he was wrong in that assumption.
Keir was a happy 16 year old kid that had just learned how to drive. He was playing basketball with his younger brother, Leoc. Keir was the perfect build for a basketball player. He was 6'5 and 247 lbs. Whereas Leoc was a little different. He was 3 years younger than Keir and was only 5'6 and 142 pounds. Almost a foot shorter and 105 pounds less than Keir, Leoc did like to play basketball much.
After Keir had won his 6th game of one-on-one in a row, Leoc decided that he didn’t want to play any sports anymore and decided to go inside. Keir dunked the ball one last time, picked it up, then headed in after Leoc.
“What’s your problem, wuss?” Keir teased.
“I don’t have a problem!” Argued Leoc.
“Well, then why did you quit?” Asked Keir handing the ball to himself around the back and spinning it around again.
“Because I don’t enjoy doing mundane things like jumping and aiming round objects into a circular tube that’s hung on a square platform.” He shot back.
While Keir was good at every sport that he had ever played, Leoc was different. He wasn’t much of an athlete. However, he was a straight A student and always did extra credit and filled out his teacher’s tax forms. Although he complained this was illegal, his teacher’s assured him it was okay as long as it benefitted the educational process.
Leoc opened the door and stormed inside. He went to the fridge and got himself a soda can. “You think you can give me one, too?” Asked Keir.
“Sure.” Leoc said picking up a can and throwing it to Keir. Keir caught it easily and opened the tab in less than a second. Afterwards, he proceeded to guzzle his drink down.
“Thanks.” He said. Keir turned towards his mom and dad. “Dad,” he started, “can I go to-.” He was cut off when Chuckie put his hand up to silence him. Keir and Leoc both turned to look at the T.V. then. They hadn’t even realized that it was on in the first place.
“The mutant looked at me, and then. . . it. . . jumped. . .and. . . attacked me,” said Bob Dole from the T.V. set.
“Can you tell us what it looked like?” asked the reporter.
“Yeah, it looked like two of them. One looked exactly like a human, and the other looked like some kind of creature that you only see in your nightmares. Oh, yeah, they were both sort of tall. All of a sudden they started attacking each other! Then the first one was thrown backwards by the second one. The second one turned towards me and started to charge. After that he said th-”
As suddenly as Chuckie had silenced Keir moments earlier, he turned the T.V. off so that no one could hear the end of Dole’s sentence. He turned towards them and said.
“Kids. Get ready to go.” At this, he got a hard stare from Jewels.
“Chuckie. . .” she warned letting the threat hang.
“I know, I know,” he started, “but we have to get this done with.”
“Dad,” started Leoc, “We already have our shoes on. We just came in, remember?”
“Oh.” he started, scratching his head, “well then get ready. We’re going to your cousin’s house.”
“ But why?” Leoc asked.
“Because he needs to be taught a lesson.” Said Chuckie in an angry tone. “Maybe you guys should go get Rer to help you out,”he added. “You might have to fight Vark.”
“Why would we have to fight our cousin?” asked Leoc.
“Because,” answered Chuckie, “he might bring out the worst in the humans. Therefore, killing us all.”
“Don’t worry,” assured Jewels. “If we can convince his parents, well, then I’m sure they’ll punish him harshly. Before you know it, this whole thing will be over.”
“But mom,” persisted Leoc, “what will happen if they don’t listen to you? Or if they’re on his side?”
“Leoc,” said Chucky. “Stop asking questions, son, and start walking.”
Right then Leoc and Keir left. Their mom and dad stood at the door watching them go down the street. When they turned the corner their parents started talking again.
“What if he’s right, Jewels?”
“Oh, Chucky,” declared Jewels, “you mustn’t believe everything our son says. He’s a very impressionable young boy.”
“I suppose you’re right,” murmured Chucky. “But what if he was right? Huh? Then what do we do?”
“I guess try to stay out of a feud,” answered Jewels.
“My brother and sister-in-law wouldn’t just let us go. We’d have to do something about it.”
“Well, I guess we could over-power them.”
“Just think for one second that they’re evil,” said Chucky. “Then what would we do?”
“Well,” thought Jewels, “I guess we’d just have to take the same path with them that we do with all of our enemies.”
“But do you really think that you could hurt family?”
“Well, we just might have to,” answered Jewels.
“What if nobody can defeat Vark?” asked Chucky.
“Well,” stated Jewels, again taking a brief moment to think about what she was going to say, “Keir is pretty strong, right?”
“Yeah,” answered Chucky. “As a matter of fact, he’s the strongest kid I know. When he grows up, I’m pretty sure he’ll even be stronger than me.”
“Right,” said Jewels. “Which means that he would probably be able to beat Vark.”
“Let’s hope he can,” said Chucky, “for all of our sakes.” That being said, Jewels and Chucky left the house and headed for their destination.
